9 facts meme [James and Braith]

Journal Entry: Fri Dec 31, 2010, 7:16 AM

Happy New Year, all! Hope you have/had a good one, depending on when you read this. I will be chilling out at home and, thanks to doing some power-work over the last day or so, I managed to finish up the last part of my essay. Takes at least a little bit of pressure off, which has helped a bunch. And now...memes!
Doing this because I was tagged twice, and they are pretty fun exercises for thinking about a character's background more deeply!

:iconchenria: tagged James :thumb186156129:

:bulletblue: No one really knows where he comes from (mainly because he refuses to tell anyone), which James likes to think makes him more interesting and mysterious. He travels so much that it doesn't really matter, anyway.

:bulletblue: He's a bard, his instrument of choice a lute. He mainly likes to tell his own bawdy tales of errant knights and rescued maidens, though will occasionally entertain with something a little more...mainstream.

:bulletblue: His constant companion is Tynet, a Vasseni, who he met a few years ago as he was travelling their lands. The two are inseparable, and quite in love, even if neither really want to say it out loud. They don't really need to—they just accept it.

:bulletblue: His muse is Belnt, the Autumn Princess, a goddess who is often depicted as looking like a petite fourteen-year-old girl with calf-length ginger hair. He often finds inspiration in pretty young girls, less out of sexual reasons and more because he finds their purity utterly beautiful, something he thinks is sorely lacking in older people, regardless of gender.

:bulletblue: He has a hedgehog as an animal companion, which is named Belnt, an animal usually associated with her. It rides on his shoulder or in a leather bag around his waist.

:bulletblue: Despite his love of Belnt, winter is his favourite season. It comes back to his love of purity, with a white blanket of snow and crisp air making him feel like ugly things in the world don't exist.

:bulletblue: He is extremely romantic and affectionate, but above that is an incredibly loyal friend. Despite his roguish appearance, he is dedicated to the end if you offer him kindness.

:bulletblue: He can't fight. At all. And really has no wish to, even if it means he often finds himself running away from an angry father or husband. He tries to rely on words, but in confrontation they often fail him, too.

:bulletblue: Despite his attempt at artistic integrity, he does really like money. He likes buying Tynet shiny, pretty things, and very much enjoys eating good food, drinking good wine and not having to worry about where he's going to sleep.

:icontemiel: tagged Braith
~As a side note~ I realise that the Arthurian legends are based in around the 600s, and I'm trying to reference things that I know from this period in Braith's history. However, what we have written about Arthur is from the medieval period, largely, which is what I am most familiar with. Those authors tended to apply medieval standards and ways of life to Arthur and his knights, despite a gap of over 400 years. So, that's why there's a mix going on here, historically. Hopefully it won't offend those who know about the Dark Ages. That isn't my area, so I'm relying on Wikipedia XD

:bulletred: She's fifteen, not an unusual age for one to be a Squire, but given her gender and heritage she's had to work extra hard to make sure she's counted amongst her male comrades. Female Squires are not completely uncommon, but they are outnumbered, and usually older when they start off.

:bulletred: It is rumoured that she is related to the Roman Emperor Hadrian after he held court in York, where her family can trace ancestry back to for many, many generations. There is no strong evidence to completely prove this, but she is determined to find it.

:bulletred: Thanks to her obsession with her ancestry and history in general, as well as military tactics, she has learned to read and write at a faster pace than other Squires may be expected to. From a young age she spent most of her free time with the monks in their library, being stubborn until they taught her basic Latin and helped her research.

:bulletred: As well as having a rudimentary understanding of Latin, enough for her to decipher a lot of what she reads, she is near fluent in French and usually speaks to the monks in it, something they forced her to do.

:bulletred: She has an older brother, Cuthbert, who is a monk. He is in a priory in the south of the country, though, and has been for many years. He, like Braith, is intensely focussed and often cold, so they write to each other rarely.

:bulletred: She never really wanted to be a Squire, but her parents came to a realisation. She would have to marry, taking with her a large chunk of their money and losing her rights. Her brother, as a monk, would never marry, so no dowry would be brought from him. This made them realise that her best option was to use her talents as a smart girl to squire for a well-known knight, one who hopefully wouldn't take her to war. It worked...sort of. She certainly has no suitors.

:bulletred: She was picked as one of two Squires to carry out the task of collecting the scattered Round Table Knights precisely because it wasn't expected she'd have to fight. Braith is not physically strong, but she is well read, respected, and very eloquent. Her verbal abilities and strategic mind, as well as her cool head and efficient personality, make her perfect as a diplomat and messenger.

:bulletred: While she understands relationships and can see the appeal in them, she has never found herself wanting one. Her parents are loving, but encouraged their children to be logical and efficient, rather than to play as they may have done naturally. Given her obsession with the family history and hard work as a Squire, something like a potential husband hasn't particularly been on her list of priorities.

:bulletred: She does have a dirty little secret, though, that being her enjoyment of Ovid's poetry. She is particularly fond of Ars Amatoria, even if she doesn't understand all of it and finds a lot of it offensive. She just finds herself fascinated by the fact someone ever had the courage to write such things down. If anyone ever finds her stash she will claim it is entirely for research purposes.

I tag; *chenria [King Allan], =temiel [Gregory or Rose] and *raka-raka [Mack or Olga]. Feel free to say no, of course!
